First-click attribution

100% of the credit goes to the touchpoint that first brought the person to you. It answers one question well: where do new customers come from?

  • Flat monthly price, no revenue tax
  • No annual contract
  • Tracking starts the minute the snippet is live

First-click attribution, also called first-touch attribution, assigns the whole value of a conversion to the first recorded interaction. If someone found you through a TikTok ad, came back through a Google search and finally bought from an email, TikTok gets 100%.

It is the best model for judging prospecting: the campaigns whose job is to introduce new people to your brand. Under last-click attribution these campaigns often look unprofitable, because someone else closes the sale.

The problem

What you miss without the first-click attribution view

Last-click reports reward the ads that close sales and ignore the ads that started them. Prospecting, video and cold-audience campaigns look like they lose money, so they get cut, and a few months later there is nobody left to retarget.

First click answers the question every growth plan depends on: where do new customers come from? Without it, you can't tell which channels fill the top of your funnel.

How it works

  1. 1

    Track every touchpoint

tracko.js records each session with its channel, source, campaign, ad set and ad.

  2. 2

    Join them to a person

Visits on any device become one journey once the person identifies.

  3. 3

    Apply the model

Credit is split across the journey's touchpoints inside your lookback window.

  4. 4

    Switch any time

Pick another model on the report; credit for every model is already computed.

Use cases

First-click attribution in practice

Protect prospecting

Show that cold campaigns start the journeys your retargeting finishes, before you cut them.

Plan acquisition budgets

Allocate new-customer budget to the channels that introduce the most buyers.

Compare with last click

Run first and last click side by side on the same report and see where they disagree.

Limitations

First click ignores everything after the first touch, so it undervalues retargeting, email and the content that convinced someone to buy. It also depends on the lookback window: touches older than the window can't be the first click.

Why BrainyMetrics

Why marketers switch to BrainyMetrics for attribution

Every model is computed for every conversion, from data you own, so the debate moves from opinions to numbers.

Meta, Google and TikTok each claim the same sale, so platform totals add up to more than your bank account.
Each sale is counted once, from your own checkout data, and reconciled against what each platform claims.
Analytics gives the last click all the credit, so the ads that start journeys look like they lose money.
Seven attribution models are computed for every conversion, so you can compare first click, last click and everything between.
Phone calls and booked calls are a black box. You know they happened, not which ad caused them.
Calls and bookings are matched to the visitor's session and the ad behind it, then tracked through qualified and closed.
Ad blockers, Safari and cross-domain checkouts quietly break your data.
A first-party tracking subdomain, server-set cookies and cross-domain linking keep journeys intact.
Spend lives in one tab, revenue in another, and ROAS is a spreadsheet you rebuild every Monday.
Spend syncs hourly and sits next to attributed revenue, so ROAS, CPA and profit are on every row, down to the ad.
Ad algorithms optimise on the few conversions their pixel happens to see.
Real purchases and leads are sent back to the ad platforms' conversion APIs, deduplicated against the pixel.

Stop guessing which marketing pays.

Get started
Is first-click the same as first-touch?

Yes. Both terms mean the full credit goes to the first recorded interaction.

Can I compare this model with others?

Yes. BrainyMetrics computes every model for every conversion, so you can switch models on any report instantly and compare them side by side.

Which conversions does it apply to?

New leads, orders (net of refunds), answered phone calls, booked calls that weren't cancelled, and any custom events you mark as conversions.

How long does setup take?

The basics take minutes: paste the snippet, connect your checkout or funnel builder, and connect your ad accounts. The setup checklist in your dashboard ticks each step off as data arrives, so you always know what's left.

Do I need a developer?

Usually not. The snippet can go in through Google Tag Manager, WordPress or your funnel builder's tracking code settings, and most revenue sources connect with a click or a webhook URL you paste. The developer guide covers the JavaScript and server API if you do have a developer.

Does the price go up as I grow?

No. Plans are a flat monthly or yearly price. We never bill a percentage of revenue or ad spend, and you can switch, pause or cancel from the Billing page without a call.

Does tracking stop if I hit a plan limit?

No. Plans limit dashboard modules and things like integrations or workspaces; tracko.js, webhooks and syncs keep collecting data, so nothing is lost if you upgrade later.

Is it privacy friendly?

Yes. BrainyMetrics supports consent modes, works with your consent banner, respects Global Privacy Control and handles sensitive form fields strictly. Data is first-party: it belongs to your workspace, not an ad network.
